Canada Changes Policy: College Degrees Eligible for Work Permits

Colombo, Sri Lanka – College Graduates will now be eligible for work permits in Canada. In a major update, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that college degrees are now eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This significant policy shift opens new doors for Sri Lankan students aiming to study, work, and build careers in Canada.

Until now, only graduates from recognized universities in Canada qualified for the PGWP. This permit allows international students to gain valuable work experience in Canada after completing their studies. With the updated policy, graduates of college-level programs can also apply, broadening career opportunities and making it easier to settle in Canada’s competitive job market.

This change is especially beneficial for Sri Lankan students, many of whom choose college programs in Canada due to their affordability and career-focused curriculum. The previous restrictions made it harder for college graduates to remain in Canada, but the new policy marks a positive step forward.

Keith Swarnadhipathi, Deputy General Manager of Fraser Education Consultants (FEC), expressed strong support for the announcement:

“This change by the IRCC represents the first sign of a softening in Canada’s immigration policy. It will provide more options for Sri Lankan students who wish to gain both education and practical work experience in Canada. We hope that further positive changes are only a matter of time.”

The move also helps address the country’s growing demand for skilled workers across various industries and sectors. Allowing college graduates to earn work permits in Canada boosts the local workforce and supports the national economy.

For Sri Lankan students, this new policy offers greater hope and better opportunities to build a successful future abroad. With rising global demand for skilled professionals, Canada’s decision is a timely, strategic step that’s expected to attract even more international students in the years to come.
